Fi1m perspective

Jake Gyllenhaal makes obsessive men worth watching, though his intensity can become overstatement. We value him most in Brokeback Mountain, where Jack Twist’s warmth gives Heath Ledger’s guarded Ennis someone worth trying to reach.

Jack Twist’s warmth matters because Ennis Del Mar has such trouble showing his own. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Jake Gyllenhaal gives us someone more readable than Heath Ledger’s Ennis, without making the relationship easy to understand. We were moved by the gap between them: Jack’s openness makes Ennis’s effort to keep his feelings hidden more painful to watch. Ang Lee allows their attraction to take time. This is the Gyllenhaal we rate most highly, convincing without making us notice how hard he is working.

His first leading role came in October Sky (1999), followed by the breakthrough of Donnie Darko (2001), with its troubled teenager and apocalyptic visions. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) brought wider recognition, but the later thrillers gave his watchfulness more sustained employment. He plays Robert Graysmith in David Fincher’s Zodiac (2007). Denis Villeneuve gave him Detective Loki in Prisoners (2013), and he both starred in and produced Nightcrawler (2014). Obsession and physical commitment became recurring features of his work, though they are not the only reasons to watch him.

Those expressive eyes can make ordinary attention look unsettling, but the same intensity can become too emphatic. The overplayed eccentricity of Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) shows the risk. In Brokeback Mountain, Lee and the actors resist making the lovers’ troubles entirely somebody else’s fault, so there is more to watch than a pair of men being kept apart. Gyllenhaal’s warmth helps us see why Jack matters to Ennis, while their difficulty understanding each other prevents the romance from becoming too comfortable.

In Maggie Gyllenhaal’s 2026 Frankenstein film, his Ronnie Reed is one of several supporting parts that promise more than the script delivers. The film keeps changing what it wants to be, and too many of those subsidiary stories are left undeveloped. That gives us little basis for judging his performance, beyond recognising that the writing has not given it enough to do. Start with Brokeback Mountain, allow for a few overlong passages, and give the two leads an evening without interruptions.
