Fi1m perspective

Jeff Goldblum’s pauses and sudden changes of pace make routine dialogue sound as though someone is thinking. We rate him when that eccentricity gives a thinly written character some life; the familiar manner is less rewarding on its own.

Goldblum pauses in the middle of a sentence, wanders away from it, then picks up speed. He makes dialogue sound as though the speaker has only just decided what to say. We like the uncertainty he brings to people who are supposed to know what they are doing, especially the scientists and odd authority figures he is so often asked to play. The danger is that recognising the manner becomes the whole pleasure.

His supporting work in The Big Chill (1983) gave way to a leading role as Seth Brundle in The Fly (1986), before Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park (1993) helped make him a major star. That leading role is worth remembering when a later film seems content merely to have him turn up. By Independence Day (1996), his particular way of speaking was an asset to a large ensemble working with some fairly basic character types.

Roland Emmerich gets good use out of him there, pairing his individuality with Will Smith’s ease. We found ourselves caring about David Levinson because Goldblum made the manufactured dialogue sound as though it belonged to a particular person. The screenplay supplies little depth, but the cast gives us people to follow through the destruction. Goldblum helps keep the business cheerful without needing the film to become a solo turn.

Wes Anderson has also used him in ensembles, including as Deputy Kovacs in The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). But his recognisable hesitations can become a casting shortcut. In Jon M. Chu’s Wicked (2024), the Wizard arrives late, and the performance offers little reason to look beyond the familiar Goldblum manner. He is welcome, but the film has already spent too long getting there.

His Wizard is more enjoyable in Wicked: For Good (2025), selling his story with the air of a man half convinced by it himself. The film lightens in his company, though his charm cannot put right its over-long plot. The salesman gives him something to do with that uncertainty, and a reason for us to watch closely. Start with Independence Day for the pleasure of watching him make underwritten dialogue worth hearing.
