Fi1m perspective

Joanne Froggatt makes quiet endurance convincing. We rate her restraint and her willingness to play less reassuring women; the comfortable dramas and familiar gangster plots around her can be harder to recommend.

Joanne Froggatt plays Anna Bates in Downton Abbey (2010–2015) as a woman who has to work at remaining dependable. The performance is restrained, and that matters: loyalty would be dull if we never sensed the pressure upon it. We rate Froggatt for making that pressure felt without insisting on our sympathy. Yet her lead in In Our Name (2010), as a soldier, came at the same point in her career. Her capacity for troubled leading roles did not begin when she left the servants’ quarters.

Dark Angel (2016), in which she plays Mary Ann Cotton, made the departure from reassuring characters explicit. Liar (2017–2020) put her at the centre of a thriller as Laura Nielson, drawing on her strength in stories about trauma and deception. These choices matter because being so convincing as a nice person can encourage writers to ask for nothing else. The darker parts give her restraint a different purpose: we cannot simply assume that a woman who keeps her feelings to herself is someone to trust.

Her return as Anna in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025) brings her back to Julian Fellowes’s writing, with its comforts and its limitations. The film is thin, with Michelle Dockery carrying most of its dramatic weight. We were soothed by the good manners and beautiful clothes, but wanted more from the people inside them. Its many small stories leave little space for any one character to detain us for long. There is pleasure in seeing Froggatt back in a familiar part, but this is a film for those already attached to the household.

MobLand (2025), with Froggatt as Jan Da Souza, exchanges the period household for a crime series without escaping familiar plotting. Tom Hardy’s fixer supplies much of the entertainment; the slow start and broad performances remain substantial qualifications. It is decent company for gangster-drama regulars, rather than a persuasive starting point for Froggatt. For a clearer reason to watch her, begin with the television Downton Abbey, then try Liar for something less comfortable.
