Fi1m perspective

John Cena is at his most useful when a film lets him be funny, fallible or kind. We rate the comic timing and the willingness to look foolish; the imposing physique is the less interesting part.

In Fast X (2023), John Cena is a cheerful uncle driving a minivan, and the change suits him. As Jakob, travelling across America with Dom's young son, he brings warmth to a film whose other family conversations tend to sound compulsory. We were glad of his scenes with the boy, because their affection briefly made all the talk of family feel justified. Cena is funny when he lets the formidable figure become someone approachable.

That took time to become clear in his film work. The early action leads, beginning with The Marine (2006), offered fairly standard material for a man with his build, while Trainwreck (2015) made his willingness to be the joke harder to overlook. His comic timing benefits from years of live performance, but the more important quality is his willingness to look ridiculous. Playing Christopher Smith in The Suicide Squad (2021) and the television series Peacemaker (2022) gave him more morally complicated material. We are more interested in that development than in seeing him sent back to another generic action lead.

Fast X is a useful warning against treating that warmth as enough on its own. Louis Leterrier's film keeps cutting away from Cena and the boy to separate adventures, until the family feels like a cast waiting to be reunited. Vin Diesel's low voice and solemn repetitions of ‘family’ make his co-star's lighter manner all the more welcome. The scattered story still defeats them both. Cena's stretch is worth watching, but we would not prescribe the whole film just to reach it.

Argylle (2024) offers another reason to distinguish the actor from the film: Matthew Vaughn's succession of reveals wears out a promising idea. Cena's casting as Wyatt is no reason to sit through it. Dave Green's Coyote vs. Acme (2026), in which he plays Buddy Crane, is a happier recommendation, funny and affectionate despite corporate satire that chooses easy targets. Its friendship between a coyote and his lawyer gives the comedy someone to care about. Make Trainwreck the other half of the double bill.
