Fi1m perspective

John Mahoney made gruff authority feel thoughtful, with warmth that never needed underlining. His Martin Crane is essential to Frasier, giving its clever family comedy someone who listens properly before he answers.

John Mahoney lets Martin Crane think before he answers. In Frasier (1993), his plain responses sound considered, never like an actor waiting for permission to deliver the next joke. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce supply much of the programme's pleasure, but Mahoney makes their display of cleverness bearable. We laughed at Martin's blunt replies because Mahoney gives them the patience of a man who has listened, rather than someone who merely dislikes long words. That distinction matters: the father has a mind of his own, and the comedy gives us reason to value it.

The film parts before Frasier already offered more than one version of that authority. In Moonstruck (1987), he plays Perry, a charming professor; in Say Anything... (1989), James Court is a protective but flawed father. The Coen brothers cast him as the Faulkner-like writer W.P. Mayhew in Barton Fink (1991). These are supporting parts with room for charm, melancholy and faults that a gruff voice alone would not convey. His strength was giving such men enough thought and feeling to remain interesting beside more flamboyant characters.

For the Coen brothers, he played Chief in The Hudsucker Proxy (1994). We recommend its screwball fantasy for the performances and elaborate sets, though the old Hollywood manners can feel over-rehearsed. The film has a harder time making us care about Tim Robbins's innocent. It is a worthwhile diversion, rather than the place to begin with Mahoney.

Frasier gave his patience its fullest use across eleven series, with Martin the retired policeman and father whose judgement could survive his sons' cleverness. Jane Leeves's Daphne Moon and Peri Gilpin's Roz Doyle bring their own directness and confidence, so Mahoney is not left to keep the family comedy grounded alone. Some misunderstandings still continue beyond their last good joke; even his timing cannot shorten the script. But he makes a plain answer worth waiting for. Return to the programme for the verbal fuss, and watch how carefully he listens before declining to join in.
