Fi1m perspective

Michael Shannon can make a grievance funny without dismissing the man who holds it. We rate his control and his awkward humour; films that need him only to look dangerous tend to waste both.

In The Bikeriders (2024), Michael Shannon's Zipco gets one long speech and makes its grievance and comedy equally convincing. We laughed because he plays the complaint seriously without concealing how funny it is. There is no need to step outside the character and invite us to join in. The man gets his say, and we are left to decide how much sympathy he deserves. That control is why we rate him.

Bug (2006) and Revolutionary Road (2008) brought him wider attention after years of supporting parts. He had already played Peter Evans in Bug on stage before taking the role on screen. A lead for Jeff Nichols in Take Shelter (2011) sits alongside the more conspicuous studio casting of General Zod in Man of Steel (2013). That mixture of independent and studio work has continued. The tendency to cast him as villains, rigid officials and volatile outsiders is understandable, but it can narrow what a film asks of him.

The Flash (2023) shows what happens when the familiar casting does most of the work. Returning as Zod, Shannon gives a slower, sadder performance than in Man of Steel, but the film offers little reason to dwell on him. Henry Braham's camera keeps taking us back into the smeared images of time travel, while Zod gets a flat desert beneath an unconvincing grey sky. There is room for another confrontation and little room for a person. Shannon supplies something recognisable, but this is not a film to choose for him.

Jeff Nichols has made six films with Shannon, and that partnership is worth following even when the film disappoints. The Bikeriders keeps us too far from its people, and its central man remains more pose than person. Nichols nevertheless gives Shannon space to be funny without requiring Zipco to become agreeable. Try it for that humour if biker films are already your inclination; do not expect Shannon to be there to rescue every scene.
