Shea Whigham makes authority look like hard work. We value the small grievances he gives supporting characters, though we would like more scripts to offer him something beyond another badge.
Fi1m perspective
In Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), Shea Whigham gives Briggs a grievance to sustain him through the pursuit of Hunt. He and Greg Tarzan Davis spend Christopher McQuarrie’s film one step behind their quarry. Whigham makes the delay feel personal. It is a small choice, but a useful one in an action film burdened with lengthy explanations. Briggs makes sense without a briefing.
The early break was Private Wilson in Tigerland (2000), followed by the more sustained recognition of Eli Thompson across five seasons of Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014). Since then, he has worked across independent films, blockbusters and television, often as a policeman, agent or other weary authority figure. His Detective Burke in Joker (2019) is another badge on that list. The risk is familiarity: another official job does not, by itself, give him a character worth our attention.
Eileen (2023) puts him inside a house where a daughter has little reason to feel safe. His Jim Dunlop, father to Thomasin McKenzie’s Eileen, is neglecting the washing-up and waving a gun about. We were uneasy watching him handle the gun, because Eileen has to come home to this man. William Oldroyd gives that household time to weigh on the film’s patient first hour, and Whigham gives us a concrete reason for her unhappiness. The later change of genre is not earned, but the father’s presence has already made the early scenes uncomfortable.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) gives him another troubled father, this time through voice alone, as police captain George Stacy. In Gwen’s world, where the film opens, their conversation goes wrong as cool blue watercolour turns orange and pink. The animation does much of the emotional work, and it would be wrong to credit Whigham alone for the effect. What makes the casting apt is the familiar pressure of a man used to having authority, now speaking as a parent. Start there for the stronger film, provided a long animation that leaves its story unfinished is not going to spoil the evening.
