Fi1m perspective

Nathalie Emmanuel is the one who knows the thing nobody else does, and she plays that knowledge quietly, without fuss. The trouble is that films keep hiring her to be right and then giving her nothing else to do.

Watch what Nathalie Emmanuel does when the men around her are shouting. She waits. As Missandei in Game of Thrones (2013–2019) she stood at Daenerys's shoulder translating what other people meant, and as Ramsey in the Fast & Furious films from Furious 7 (2015) she has sat at a laptop telling the drivers where to go. She is nearly always the one who understands the situation first, and she has a way of holding a line back for half a second so that it lands as information rather than as a speech. It is a useful habit and an underused one.

The career runs in phases. There was West End theatre as a child, then four years as Sasha Valentine in Hollyoaks (2006–2010), then a stretch of shop work before Game of Thrones found her. Missandei began as a small part and was made a regular from the fifth season, and by the end she was one of the few people on that programme who could be trusted with a quiet scene. The franchises followed: Harriet in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and its sequel, Ramsey across four films, and then a run of larger parts in Army of Thieves (2021), The Invitation (2022), Arthur the King (2024) and Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis (2024).

Our own reviews show where the problem lies, and it is rarely with her. In The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019) she voices Deet with a clear, likeable warmth, but the puppet's face can only blink and widen its eyes, so she and her fellow Gelflings push the feeling into their throats and sometimes push too hard. In Fast X (2023) Ramsey is parked in London with Roman, Tej and Han for a chase, a fight and a chat about loyalty while the film attends to Jason Momoa, and we confess we stopped following her strand altogether. In Megalopolis, Julia Cicero is the mayor's daughter who goes to work for Cesar Catilina and is asked to do nothing but gaze at him and be right about him. Emmanuel does what she can with that, and we found ourselves feeling sorry for her, which is not what an actor wants from a critic: she delivers Coppola's pronouncements with such care that you can see her looking for the person underneath them, and there is not one.

That is the pattern. Directors see intelligence and restraint and cast her for it, then write the intelligent, restrained woman as a fixture rather than a character. The leads in Army of Thieves and The Invitation suggest she is trying to get out of the corner. What she needs is a script in which she is allowed to be wrong about something, and we have not seen that film yet.
