Fi1m perspective

Rashida Jones makes clever dialogue sound conversational, and we value her restraint in an ensemble. Her writing is sharp about familiar grievances, while her acting has sometimes been limited by thin supporting parts.

Rashida Jones delivers a comic line as though she has only just thought of it. We like that ease: an ensemble needs actors who can be funny without making every exchange a competition. Her Karen Filippelli in The Office (2006) helped establish her in television comedy, followed by Ann Perkins in Parks and Recreation (2009–2015). The Office is worth staying with through its borrowed beginnings and occasional overplaying, for the company of the cast.

Early wife and girlfriend roles offered limited scope. Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012), which she co-wrote and starred in, marked a useful turn towards shaping the material. Her feel for sharp, character-led dialogue gave her another way to contribute when the acting work was restrictive. The benefit is clearest when she writes people who have had years to learn exactly how to irritate one another.

In Olivia Wilde’s The Invite (2026), written by Jones and Will McCormack, two couples spend an evening in one flat, and years of irritation surface in corrections and interruptions. We laughed a great deal in the first hour because the characters kept correcting each other’s anecdotes with such familiar impatience. Jones and McCormack understand how an old grievance can arrive fully rehearsed in a single sentence. The middle sags and the confined setting retains the feel of a play, but the dialogue gives four actors plenty to work with.

In Klaus (2019), her voice work as Alva helps keep a quarrelsome animated company distinct. Sergio Pablos’s film is worth seeing for its drawings and oddness, although the writing sometimes confuses unpleasantness with personality. Jones and the other supporting voices do useful work, but some of the characters need more than the script gives them. Start with The Office if it is her acting that interests you, and give the ensemble time to settle.
