Fi1m perspective

Tim Robbins makes the effort of staying composed visible. We value his patience and restraint, though The Shawshank Redemption shows how easily that dignity can become too perfect when the writing insists on our admiration.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne as someone making a continuous effort to hold himself together. His reserve makes us wait, and the performance is stronger for refusing to hurry our acquaintance. Even when Frank Darabont’s screenplay gives him another chance to be admirable, Robbins does not look pleased with himself. We were moved by the strain beneath Andy’s composure, because Robbins makes maintaining that dignity feel like a daily task. It is a fine performance, with a flaw in the writing that it cannot quite overcome.

His earlier films also make room for a broader, less solemn performer. Bull Durham (1988) brought him to wider notice, followed by the lead in Robert Altman’s satire The Player (1992). In The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), Joel and Ethan Coen put his comic timing to work. Those films are worth keeping beside The Shawshank Redemption: treating Robbins only as a patient, dignified figure would miss a substantial part of his work.

Darabont nevertheless provides the clearest reason for our regard. He gives Robbins and Morgan Freeman time to make their central friendship matter, and the film earns much of its warmth there. The difficulty is that the screenplay keeps telling us what deserves our admiration. Andy’s dignity can look too perfect, and the repeated moral lessons leave less for us to discover in his restraint. There are passages when the writing would do better to leave these two actors alone, trusting the relationship they have made worth our attention.

Mystic River (2003), directed by Clint Eastwood, gives him a supporting role as Dave Boyle, with his physical work carrying the effects of long-term trauma. The limitation here is different: the character’s disparate traits do not always seem to belong to the same person. Even so, it is useful to see how much he can do with posture after the reserve of Andy. Start with The Shawshank Redemption, and allow for the occasions when Darabont explains what his actors have already made clear.
