Fi1m perspective

Ed Harris makes authority believable by showing the concentration it requires. We rate him most when a film gives him work to do and colleagues to do it with; another menacing figure is not always enough.

Watch Ed Harris concentrating in Apollo 13 (1995). As Gene Kranz, he makes the work on the ground worth following without pulling attention away from the people sharing it. We were gripped because his concentration made us care about understanding the technical problems. Ron Howard gives practical work room to be interesting, and Harris supplies the authority without making his colleagues seem incidental. This is the sort of ensemble acting we value in him: focused, serious and attentive to what everyone else is doing.

The broad pattern of his casting was there in The Right Stuff (1983), his breakthrough as John Glenn. The bitter salesman Dave Moss in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and the controlling Christof in The Truman Show (1998) offered different uses for that intensity. He also made room for directing, taking the lead in Pollock (2000) and later directing and starring in Appaloosa (2008).

Rose Glass finds a more peculiar use for his familiar menace in Love Lies Bleeding (2024). His Lou Sr. runs a gun range, keeps insects in glass cases and wears long grey hair down the back of a bald head. Those details help him belong to this sweaty desert noir without needing much explanation. The casting works, though we would welcome more parts that ask him for something other than menace.

In How to Make a Killing (2026), the restriction is simpler: there is too little of him. John Patton Ford casts Harris as Whitelaw Redfellow among relatives played by Bill Camp, Zach Woods and Topher Grace, then allows them only a scene or two apiece. Harrison Atkins's brisk editing keeps the film moving, but leaves this family too little time to matter. The disappointment is in how little Ford asks of actors capable of making these relatives worth watching.

Start with Apollo 13, particularly if the villains have made him seem predictable. William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert's screenplay allows practical questions to take time, and Harris makes that time count. For the next director considering him for a short appearance as somebody unpleasant, our request is simple: give him time to do more than look forbidding.
