Fi1m perspective

Harrison Ford makes capable men look as though the job is costing them something. We value the effort and the reluctant humour; he is less rewarding when reserve leaves us with too little to care about.

At the unwanted retirement party in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), Harrison Ford makes Indiana Jones look ashamed of being left behind. We were moved by the embarrassment he lets us see in a character usually too busy to dwell on it. He takes the man's age seriously without asking us to find it funny. James Mangold's film then buries that fine performance under far too many chases, as though Ford looking his age were a problem the action could solve.

Stardom came with Han Solo in Star Wars (1977), followed by Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). The sardonic hero suited him, and his physical commitment made the effort of getting through an adventure convincing. Witness (1985) let him show more vulnerability; The Fugitive (1993) put him back under pressure in an action thriller. These leading roles made good use of an actor who could look capable without suggesting that anything came easily.

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) finds the limit of that reserve. As Deckard, Ford withholds the easy charm, which suits the coldness of the film but leaves its spare detective story harder to care about. Sean Young's Rachael makes us look for the trouble beneath her composure; Ford too often gives us little to look for. We recommend the film highly, but he is not the chief reason, and its persuasive city does more to hold our attention than its detective.

The digitally younger Ford in Dial of Destiny suggests another way to waste him. Cinematographer Phedon Papamichael shoots the prologue in rain and near-darkness, but the face still distracts from the action. Production designer Adam Stockhausen's flat, full of things nobody has dusted, gives the older Jones a more persuasive setting than the prologue gives his younger self. That neglected space helps Ford make the character's disappointment tangible, without needing another demonstration that he can survive a chase.

The later shift towards supporting and character parts, including 42 (2013), makes sense for an actor who can convey so much through discomfort. We would rather see him allowed to be difficult, weary or vulnerable than asked to reproduce an old entrance. The next worthwhile Ford part need not come with a younger version of him.
