Fi1m perspective

Hugh Grant makes hesitation funny, then makes us wonder what it is concealing. We value the precision behind the stammers and small laughs, particularly when his charm becomes a reason to keep our distance.

In Heretic (2024), Hugh Grant raises a hand as though stopping himself from saying too much, then carries on talking. His Mr Reed gives a lecture on religion through board games without raising his voice. We were frightened by the way his apologetic stammer made an apparently civil conversation feel harder and harder to leave. Cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon uses warm lamplight, while editor Justin Li lets exchanges run without a cut; Grant has time to make the courtesy unpleasant. The second half's more ordinary horror is a disappointment after this.

That awkwardness was useful long before it became threatening. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) established him as a romantic lead, and the Richard Curtis-scripted comedies made the hesitant Englishman so familiar that the precision could be overlooked. In Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995), his Edward Ferrars is reserved, with a comic discomfort that keeps the restraint from becoming blank. Alan Rickman's Colonel Brandon carries more weight, but Grant gives Lee a lighter awkwardness that suits the comedy.

About a Boy (2002) had already offered a more confident variation before the move towards character parts in the 2010s, including Paddington 2 (2017). As Forge in Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023), he smiles through his lies, with costume designer Amanda Monk's velvet and rings making the vanity plain. Grant makes him seem delighted rather than embarrassed that anyone might notice the lying.

Paul King gets a different irritation from him in Wonka (2023), where his Oompa Loompa seems aggrieved at having to be there at all. The weary delivery makes the jokes land in a film whose uninterrupted sweetness otherwise wears us down. He supplies some welcome bad temper, though not enough to give the film the bite it lacks. A good supporting turn can only repair so much.

The more affecting development is in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025). Daniel Cleaver is still unable to speak sincerely, but Grant lets us see him beginning to recognise that limitation. His few scenes are the film's funniest and saddest, giving the old evasions a cost without insisting that we forgive them. For a sense of what he can do beyond making charm suspicious, start there.
