Hugo Weaving can make authority threatening with little more than his voice. We value him most when he lets some weakness show, as in The Royal Hotel: being formidable is only one of the things he does well.
Fi1m perspective
Billy, the pub owner in The Royal Hotel (2023), is a mess, and Hugo Weaving does not tidy him up for us. He can be pathetic and dangerous within the same scene. We felt uneasy watching him because his weakness offered no reassurance that the women working behind his bar were safe. Kitty Green gives him a difficult part, and he plays it without asking us to excuse Billy.
The early breakthroughs were Proof (1991) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). Agent Smith in The Matrix (1999) brought him international recognition and drew on his ability to suggest menace with his voice and minimal expression. Elrond in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) gave him another lasting association with large-scale fantasy. Such roles can encourage casting that asks for authority and little else, particularly when there is exposition to deliver. He has kept working in Australian cinema and theatre alongside the larger productions.
In Priscilla, his Tick keeps the feeling credible when Stephan Elliott presses too hard on the sentiment. Guy Pearce supplies the eager needling as Adam, while Terence Stamp gives the quieter passages weight. Weaving keeps Tick warm without making every exchange an invitation to be moved. The insults are funniest when the actors toss them away as though they have said them before. Some of Elliott's jokes still sound laboured, however briskly they are delivered.
Weaving joined Slow Horses in 2024 as Frank Harkness, and we want more time with him and less time spent on the thriller plot. He and Jonathan Pryce, as David Cartwright, are most rewarding when the series stays in the building. The office scenes are the reason to watch; adding Weaving does not cure the show's ordinary plotting. Start with Priscilla for the warmer company; choose The Royal Hotel if you can bear an evening behind that bar.
