We rate Keanu Reeves most highly when a film lets him act with his whole body. His slow delivery can be unexpectedly touching, but treating his every appearance as an occasion does him no favours.

In John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), Keanu Reeves looks as though he would appreciate a chair. He speaks little, falls often and makes exhaustion the clearest thing about John Wick. We rate him most when the effort tells us what the dialogue cannot. The action is worth the evening, but the lengthy explanations of the rules leave us waiting for him to get moving again.
The comedy breakthrough of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) led to action stardom in Speed (1994), then to Neo in The Matrix (1999). After a quieter period, John Wick (2014) brought him back to prominence by making physical skill central. His commitment to training helps explain why these parts fit him. Chad Stahelski is a valuable directing partner for an actor who can communicate so much through movement.
That restraint can work without a body to watch. Voicing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), Reeves takes his lines slowly and gives the character's grief a weight the animation cannot always manage. We were a little moved, which we had not expected, because his quiet delivery made the loss matter amid the noise. The film keeps returning to volume when his voice offers something worth listening to.
Ballerina (2025) shows what happens when a film mistakes his presence for sufficient entertainment. Len Wiseman repeatedly pauses to admire Reeves as John Wick after a few slowly delivered words, and the scenes drag. Editors Jason Ballantine and Nicholas Lundgren cut the early fights into fragments, denying us the bodies moving through space that this sort of acting needs. We can see the attraction of bringing him back, but the reverence makes him less useful to the film.
The complaint that he can seem wooden has some basis. There are times when the slow delivery draws attention to itself rather than to the person speaking. But asking for more expression is not always the answer; Shadow benefits from being allowed to speak quietly. Start with John Wick: Chapter 4 if action is yours, and allow for more ceremonial conversation than anyone needs.
