Fi1m perspective

Jeff Bridges makes carefully timed acting look like a man taking a moment to think. We value the patience and kindness of his Dude, though some later parts ask for little beyond the familiar rumble.

In The Big Lebowski (1998), Jeff Bridges makes answering a question look like an interruption the Dude might reasonably resent. He leaves a little space before the reply, then lets it come out as though he has only just decided what to say. We rate him most highly here: the timing is exact, but the character never seems to be working at being funny. The kindness matters too, because without it the Dude's lack of a plan could become tiresome.

From the young Duane Jackson of The Last Picture Show (1971) to the alien of Starman (1984), Bridges established how persuasive he could be in quite different sorts of part. The later turn towards damaged musicians and grizzled authority brought Bad Blake in Crazy Heart (2009) and Rooster Cogburn in True Grit (2010). The latter reunited him with Joel and Ethan Coen. He researches roles and makes physical changes for them, however casual the result may look.

The Coens get particularly good use from his patience in The Big Lebowski, putting John Goodman's Walter Sobchak beside a man who declines to share his urgency. Bridges varies the delay before a reply without making the Dude seem slow, while Goodman gives minor bowling-alley business an unreasonable weight. We laughed at the bowling-alley exchanges because Goodman treats every point as urgent and Bridges takes his time answering. Their conversations make the wandering plot forgivable, though some of the diversions still run too long.

That familiar ease is useful even when a film has little else to offer him. His return as Kevin Flynn in TRON: Ares (2025) gives us a welcome face in a film short of people worth caring about, without making it a good film. In Minions & Monsters (2026), he voices Frank and Elwood with much the same rumble. It is agreeable work, but the two parts offer less distinction than we might hope for. We recommend The Big Lebowski first, unless a wandering crime story is certain to test your patience.
