Fi1m perspective

Nick Offerman's deadpan delivery can make an eccentric feel like someone we know. We rate his warmth as much as his timing, and wish more films gave him something to do beyond sounding like the man in charge.

In Margo's Got Money Troubles (2026), Nick Offerman lets Jinx be odd without making everyone else stop and watch him. Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer have space to be funny around him, rather than merely supplying his cues. His eccentricity feels like part of a recognisable person. This is the Offerman we most enjoy: dry, companionable and willing to let a scene belong to somebody else.

Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation (2009–2015) made that deadpan delivery familiar, but also made it easy to cast him as the same gruff man again. Offerman has deliberately sought to avoid those repetitions. Dramatic television work in Fargo (2015) and The Last of Us (2023) widened the possibilities. We would not treat him simply as a comedy actor, even if some of his film roles seem designed to encourage it.

The films we have reviewed have often found little for him to do. Craig Gillespie's Dumb Money (2023) reduces his Ken Griffin to good shirts and calm telephone calls, with little room for a person behind them. Alex Garland gives him only a few minutes as the President in Civil War (2024), principally rehearsing a speech. Both films rely on how readily we accept him as someone accustomed to giving orders. The writing has settled for the obvious use of him.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025) finds a similarly narrow use for his General Sidney. Christopher McQuarrie places him among the officials whose chief task is to assure Ethan that nobody else can save the day. We were bored by those repeated assurances; Offerman is an actor we want to hear from, and here we kept wishing the briefing would end. Eddie Hamilton's fragmented cutting makes the exposition harder to follow, leaving little chance for a performance to develop between the instructions.

Give him people to respond to and the difference is clear. With Fanning and Pfeiffer in Margo's Got Money Troubles, he can be funny without turning his colleagues into spectators. The programme's heavier drama sometimes asks for too much attention, but the actors give us a reason to stay. Start there for Offerman, and forgive the occasional shortage of jokes.
