Patton Oswalt makes talkative obsessives engaging, with a voice built for enthusiasm and sarcasm. We rate him most when the comedy allows some melancholy, though familiar nerd roles can ask too little of him.
Fi1m perspective
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), Patton Oswalt turns up as Dr. Hubert Wartzki for one scene in a library. We enjoyed that brief visit, because it gives us a comic pleasure amid a family story repeatedly interrupted by the old team. Gil Kenan's film has other welcome comic turns from James Acaster and Kumail Nanjiani, but we cannot recommend it on those pleasures alone. Oswalt is useful to have around, though a small part puts a firm limit on what he can repair.
The familiar Oswalt character knows a great deal about something and is willing to keep talking about it. His stand-up's rapid monologues about comics and films help explain the casting, and also its limitations: another nerd role can give him too little to do. Spence Olchin in The King of Queens (1998–2007) established his television presence, before Remy in Ratatouille (2007) made his voice work more prominent. Animation suits a performer who can convey both eagerness and sarcasm so clearly in his voice.
There is more to him in Young Adult (2011), as Matt Freehauf. The supporting part draws on his ability to be funny without losing the melancholy or intensity underneath. He has worked twice with director Jason Reitman; that association is worth remembering alongside the more familiar television and animation work. We would welcome more parts that make use of this less comfortable side of his acting.
He voices Strappy in Buddy (2026), Casper Kelly's murderous-unicorn comedy, which finds amusement in its affection for children's television. The setting and voice work are its attractions, while the loose storytelling keeps our enthusiasm in check. It is worth a look for the curious, but there is no need to treat every supporting credit as an essential stop. For a fuller introduction, pair Ratatouille with Young Adult before working through the guest appearances.
