Fi1m perspective

Zoe Saldaña makes anger readable in a shoulder or a hand, and gives uncertainty equal care. We rate her highly, even when the films leave her doing much of the work.

In Star Trek (2009), Zoe Saldaña's Uhura has to make an impression while a whole crew is being introduced. She does it through confidence, holding her place beside Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto without seeming to ask for more attention. J.J. Abrams gives her limited room, but she makes the supporting part distinct. The same year's Avatar made Neytiri, performed through motion capture, her other breakthrough: two science-fiction roles that established the territory she would keep returning to.

Those returns can give her something worthwhile to resist. After Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) finds her Gamora refusing the relationship Chris Pratt's Quill thinks he can resume. James Gunn lets her be firm without making her unreasonable. In a film whose middle drags, their scenes are unusually adult: his unhappiness does not oblige her to pretend they share a past.

Emilia Pérez (2024) gives that resistance more physical expression. As Rita, she keeps exhaustion visible and anger largely off her face, then lets her shoulders, hands and sharply delivered singing do the work. Her dance-informed movement helps Jacques Audiard's musical most when it makes the effort of containing that anger visible. She carries the first act, but cannot keep the film from sliding into melodrama or make its weaker songs worth hearing.

James Cameron gives her less to explore in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). Her Neytiri is forceful in her rage, but the script keeps announcing feelings and repeating the family's predicament. Saldaña supplies the anger convincingly; she cannot supply a new story. We would rather see her given something beyond another reason to be furious.

Elio (2025) offers that change, with Saldaña voicing the boy's aunt Olga Solís as a woman trying to hide how unprepared she is for the job. We were moved by Olga standing in the doorway, unable to find words while her nephew talks to the night sky. The voice performance allows uncertainty without turning her into a model of patient kindness. The later space adventure is busier and less affecting. For Saldaña in a quieter part, the Earth scenes are worth seeking out.
