Fi1m perspective

Stephen Tobolowsky makes officious men and persistent nuisances worth watching. We value his supporting work, but films that pause to acknowledge his familiar face are giving him too little to do.

In Freakier Friday (2025), Stephen Tobolowsky's Mr Bates arrives and the film pauses for recognition. That pause tells us something about the value of a familiar supporting actor, and rather more about a film prepared to coast on it. We felt a small impatience as these returning faces accumulated, because each entrance stopped the story rather than helped it along. Tobolowsky is worth employing for more than the pleasure of having spotted him.

The early films give a useful corrective to that kind of affectionate roll call. Mississippi Burning (1988) casts him as Clayton Townley; in The Grifters (1990), he is the jeweller. Stephen Frears's film earns our recommendation through its cruel humour and competing loyalties, with Anjelica Huston providing a disturbing emotional force. The pleasure of following a supporting actor is finding films like this along the way, even when the strongest reason to watch is somebody else.

Still, Ned Ryerson, the insurance salesman in Groundhog Day (1993), is the part that brought wider recognition. The appeal fits his recurring speciality: eccentric, annoying or officious men who are immediately recognisable as a type. We like an actor who can make a nuisance worth spending time with, though being asked to provide another such man can become a limitation. Sammy Jankis in Memento (2000) is a useful reminder to look beyond that comic reputation.

Back in Freakier Friday, Ganatra's kindness towards her supporting cast has a cost. Mr Bates is one of several returning characters given a recognition beat, in a four-way plot that is already cumbersome. Curtis is funny enough to carry it; we would have preferred fewer pauses and more for the supporting cast to play. For an introduction to Tobolowsky's comic work, start with Groundhog Day rather than the reunion.
