Fi1m perspective

Tracy Letts makes men used to being obeyed worth watching, especially when their certainty begins to fail. We rate him most when a part allows some embarrassment or doubt beneath the authority; the sternness alone can become familiar.

In A House of Dynamite (2025), Tracy Letts’s General Anthony Brady wants to shoot back, and his sentences leave little room for discussion. We were frightened by the bluntness of that demand. Kathryn Bigelow’s nuclear procedural gives him a useful setting: a man accustomed to issuing orders confronted with a problem that cannot safely be settled by one. Letts makes the demand credible without giving us much comfort in the person making it. The film is worth the evening, though playing the same eighteen minutes three times gradually costs it tension.

Letts is easy to file under stern men in suits, which understates the work. He played George in the 2012 revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, while also working as a playwright. His film and television supporting work expanded from the mid-2010s. Greta Gerwig directed him as Larry McPherson in Lady Bird (2017) and Mr. Dashwood in Little Women (2019). Those parts are worth remembering before treating the next executive as the full measure of him.

James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari (2019) gives that superior a more revealing weakness. As Henry Ford II, Letts lets the executive’s insecurity show through the hard exterior, so that his authority needs more protection than it first appears to. We recommend the film for its driving and the persuasive friendship between Matt Damon and Christian Bale’s characters, but the corporate interference becomes repetitive. Letts keeps that side of the story watchable because Ford’s insecurity gives the bluster a reason. He is still the boss, and Letts makes clear how much that matters to him.

The limitation is partly in the work he is offered: executives, generals and other men whose job is to sound certain. There is only so much an actor can do if the script needs an order delivered and no more. Brady’s clipped demand works within Bigelow’s procedural, but we would not mistake another uniform for a fresh challenge. Mangold gives the authority figure a vulnerability that makes him worth watching beyond his function in the plot. For Letts, start with Ford v Ferrari; just be prepared to spend longer with the management than seems necessary.
