Matt Damon makes capable men believable, then lets us notice how badly they need approval. We rate him highly for the small hesitations and the unflattering details, though he cannot always make an underwritten part feel complete.
Fi1m perspective
In Ocean's Eleven (2001), Matt Damon's Linus wants the others to take him seriously. Damon makes that eagerness funny without asking us to despise it. He is particularly good at showing uncertainty in men who would rather look capable. The later Ocean's Twelve (2004) gives him plenty to do but little that matters. By Ocean's Thirteen (2007), Linus's wish for respect has earned him a false nose.
After the breakthrough of Good Will Hunting (1997), co-written with Ben Affleck, The Bourne Identity (2002) established him as an action lead. Steven Soderbergh gets particularly good work from him when his characters cannot understand what is happening to them. In Contagion (2011), his Mitch Emhoff asks the same question twice, unable to absorb what he has been told. We were moved by that repetition: Damon lets us hear the bewilderment, and Soderbergh leaves him alone in the corridor.
In Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra (2013), he is good at looking dazzled, though plainly too old for the young Scott Thorson. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick takes Scott from denim into matching white suits, doing much of the work of showing him being remade. Soderbergh shoots the rooms in warm gold and cuts scenes short, keeping us a little distant. Damon cannot supply the wants that Richard LaGravenese's script has left vague, and we learn too little about Scott beyond his susceptibility to another man's attention.
Under Ben Affleck in Air (2023), he plays Sonny Vaccaro as a man worn down by years of being right without reward. Charlese Antoinette Jones puts him in shirts a size too small, and Damon makes the discomfort part of the performance. Viola Davis's Deloris Jordan listens with visible doubt, giving his salesman someone worth persuading. He carries the film, but its admiration for the corporation is harder to share.
Christopher Nolan uses him for practical relief as General Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer (2023), then gives him the lead in The Odyssey (2026). His Odysseus is slow to answer, quick to anger and embarrassed by both, an unglamorous performance that suits him. The film's middle stretch drags, but the performance deserves the attention. Start with Ocean's Eleven for the comedy; try The Odyssey for a leading man willing to look worn out.
