A romance has one job: to make us believe two particular people want each other, and to make us mind whether they get to. The rest is furniture. What we judge is whether the wanting is specific, whether the obstacle would trouble a grown adult, and whether the film has the nerve to let it hurt. Our shelf leans towards old Hollywood, where Lubitsch, Wyler and Cukor knew the best love scenes are mostly about something else, and Hitchcock kept finding the cruelty in it.

Start with Casablanca, 93, where Bogart and Bergman make the parting hurt and the wit gets the plot past its conveniences. Then Brokeback Mountain, 92, in which Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal make hidden desire painfully convincing. Then A Matter of Life and Death, 92, Powell and Pressburger's fantasy, which is funny, moving and safe to hand to almost anyone. After those, Notorious and Vertigo, if you can bear a romance that unsettles rather than consoles.
