Every thriller film we have reviewed that is out now, with the score and where it is streaming. How we rate.

A thriller is a machine for making you wait. The bad ones mistake noise for tension and cut every few seconds so you cannot tell where anyone is standing. The good ones show you the whole room, tell you exactly what is at stake, and then make you sit there. What we are scoring is whether the fear survives the plot: whether we still cared about the people once the twist had been paid out. Hitchcock recurs on this shelf more than anyone, which tells you what we value, though most of what we hold is a good deal more recent than he is.

Start with Rear Window (94), which is exact about why we like to watch; Jaws (93), where the people matter as much as the shark; and The Third Man (92), gripping and funny about the harm friendship can excuse. After that, try Chinatown, then Notorious for a romance run as a spy operation.
