Drama is where a film goes when no other label will have it, so the word on its own tells you little. What we are judging is whether the people on screen behave as people do under pressure, and whether the film has the patience to let them do it. The good ones earn their length; the rest merely ask for it. Our shelf leans to the 1990s and 2010s, though the films we rate highest are mostly older, and Steven Soderbergh turns up more often than anyone else.

Start with Seven Samurai, 95, where the recruiting of the men is as absorbing as the fighting; The Passion of Joan of Arc, 94, for Maria Falconetti's face, which is nearly the whole film and is enough; and The Godfather, 93, which makes criminal authority disturbingly attractive without ever pretending it is anything else. After those, Casablanca and GoodFellas are the pair we hand people most often.
