Every comedy film we have reviewed that is out now, with the score and where it is streaming. How we rate.

A comedy has one job and it is harder than it looks: the joke has to land, and then the next one has to land too. What we score is timing and construction, whether the laughs come from the people on screen or from a writer nudging us in the ribs, and whether the film still stands up once the jokes stop. The names that keep coming back on this shelf are Lubitsch, Soderbergh, Anderson and the Coens, who cut cleanly, trust the audience and never explain a gag twice.

Start with Some Like It Hot (92), a farce whose jokes are exact and whose three leads make them look accidental; Dr. Strangelove (93), which is funny and frightening in the same breath; and Singin' in the Rain (93), for comic timing that happens to be danced. After those, try Parasite, which makes you laugh at a con and then presents the bill.
